A stunning plant from the Canary Islands which is well worth growing if you've got the right conditions. In its first year it'll form a low rosette of silver, hairy, spear-like leaves, but the next year it'll suddenly spurt into growth and produce a summer flower spike packed with small blue flowers. After flowering the plant scatters seed and dies. In mild, sheltered parts of the UK they might germinate where they land, but in colder areas you can collect the seed for sowing. It has been given the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society.
